Martin Koolhoven wins the Rutger Hauer Award

Film Director Martin Koolhoven will receive the Rutger Hauer Award at the 9th edition of the Shortcutz Amsterdam Annual Awards. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 1st, at EYE Filmmuseum, and includes guests such as Stanley Kubrick’s producer Jan Harlan (The Shining), actress Hanna van Vliet (ANNE+), costume designer Jany Temime (Harry Potter), director Bobby Boermans (Mocro Maffia), among others.

The Rutger Hauer Award is awarded every year to a person who has been a role model for the new generation of filmmakers or an institution that has made an extraordinary effort to develop and promote new Dutch film talents.

The prize is a limited-edition photo of Rutger Hauer, made and signed by renowned photographer and film director Anton Corbijn.

This award went previously to film director Paul Verhoeven and to the project ‘Kort!’, a programme for the new talent that has produced 200 short films in 20 years.

Shortcutz Amsterdam is a platform for emerging Dutch film talents. Shortcutz's mission is to help the new talent do a “shortcut” to National and International Audiences and the most exciting professionals in the industry.

In the last years of his life, Hauer, who passed away in July 2019, devoted himself to guiding and supporting the development of young filmmakers. For Shortcutz Amsterdam, he was an active ambassador and advisor until his death.

At the Weekly Sessionz, Shortcutz asks new talents, “Who is your favourite Dutch film director?” as a mandatory question. Martin Koolhoven is definitely one of the favourites of the new generation. The up-and-coming talents and peers admire him for his work and extensive film knowledge.

Maarten Treurniet, on behalf of the Shortcutz Board, states:“ The board of the Shortcutz Foundation is pleased to announce that Martin Koolhoven is this year's winner of the Rutger Hauer Award. Martin Koolhoven is a role model for many young filmmakers. Not only because he is a very gifted filmmaker but also because he is a strong advocate for talent development.”
